MEDICAL SERVICES
Many people will have a clear idea of whether working in one of the health professions would appeal to them. In a sector that involves plenty of close contact with patients, often in a hospital setting, jobs can be attractive and rewarding to those with the right attributes. If you are thinking about a career in health, it’s likely you have certain attributes you believe will be fulfilled by the kind of environment you’d like to work in. Healthcare professionals have opportunities to exercise a range of skills and satisfy a common set of values, including: * judgement * tact * sensitivity * professional knowledge * practical skills * interpersonal skills.
Are you qualified?
If you are already on a relevant course of study, your training will have prepared you for the work and you will probably have decided whether it’s the right career for you.
However, if you are currently studying for an unrelated qualification, you will need to give serious consideration to two things.
It would help you to try to view the profession you have in mind from close quarters. That could mean at the least speaking to a practitioner and, preferably, visiting them in the workplace. You will need to consider whether you are prepared to undertake the postgraduate qualification which will be an essential pre-entry requirement. In most cases this will amount to three years’ study or more. |
